The GL-class is dead, long live the GLS-class! Mercedes-Benz?s renamed three-row SUV family is as big and bad as ever, now with updated powertrains and a lightly revised exterior. This family hauler seats seven adults and can swallow up to 94 cubic feet of cargo. The stately exterior and luxe interior do justice to the Mercedes-Benz name, and prodigious acceleration will strike fear into the hearts of lesser automobiles. Competition is stiff, but the GLS-class holds its own, which is why it earned a place among our 10Best Trucks and SUVs.

What?s New for 2017?
Mercedes renamed the GL-class as the GLS-class for 2017 to better parallel the nomenclature of its sedan lineup. All GLS models now use an automatic stop/start system, which helps conserve fuel in city driving. Inside, Benz?s updated COMAND system has a touchpad in addition to the existing rotary knob. Other revisions include new ambient lighting and trim colors, a three-spoke steering wheel, and an available Designo Nappa leather interior.
Trims and Options We?d Choose

The entry-level GLS450 should provide plenty of capability for most drivers, and it avoids the $25,150 premium that stepping up to the more powerful GLS550 incurs. The GLS450 comes standard with a rather barren interior that does not befit the model?s $69,625 base price, but careful additions can increase the GLS450?s luxury quotient without seriously inflating the price. Standard features include:

  • An eight-speaker audio system with 8.0-inch LCD display
  • Heated front seats
  • Chrome and aluminum interior trim

Heated and cooled front cupholders are too good to pass up at a relatively inexpensive $180. Looking for a lift? Then you might be interested in the $1340 Appearance package, which adds illuminated running boards along with 20-inch wheels.
